- Help with weight loss
Butter coffee, made popular as Bulletproof Coffee (aka BPC to those in the “community”) was created by Dave Asprey. You can read the origin story here. Bulletproof coffee is not just greasy butter stirred into coffee, yuck!
Check out this frothy little concoction. So smooth and oh, so creamy.
It’s said to keep you full from morning till lunch. And if you don’t have anything else for breakfast, it can keep your body in a fasted state, which means your body can continue to detox and take advantage of all the anti-ageing and beneficial goodness of a fast, even though you just consumed a yummy coffee full of fat that’s going to keep you full. Fasting without the hunger and cravings!
Most People Drink BPC as their Breakfast
Fasting from dinner the night before until lunch the next day, with or without a Bulletproof Coffee, is known as intermittent fasting and has quite a few benefits including increasing the body’s cellular repair functions, decreasing insulin and increasing levels of human growth hormone. .
By consuming fat without any carbohydrates or protein, our body is able to maintain a fasting state without the hunger or cravings claims Dave Asprey.
Many people drinking BPC report not feeling hungry until 2pm and eating less food overall the whole day so they are able to maintain or even lose weight. Check out the BP rapid fat loss protocol here.
With that satiated feeling you won’t feel tempted by the day old donuts left on the counter or by that candy bar, I mean protein bar, you keep in your desk drawer for emergencies.
What is This Stuff?
Bulletproof coffee is traditionally made from just 3 ingredients: coffee, butter, and MCT oil.
The coffee provides the majority of polyphenols (important plant based antioxidants) in most American’s diets. The caffeine from the coffee helps keep you energized during the morning.
The fat from the butter will keep you feeling satisfied until lunch and also provides you with important fat soluble vitamins like vitamin D, E, K2, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants (assuming you use high quality butter from grassfed cows). Most people use unsalted KerryGold butter which can be found almost anywhere these days. I have seen it at Trader Joes, Costco, Whole Foods and even most local grocery store chains. If you like less fat, just use less. Sometimes I don’t even add butter (shhhh).
The MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oil in the coffee predominantly converts into ketones that directly fuel your brain. With this ketone fuel you will have the energy to crank through whatever needs doing until it’s time for lunch. Some people use coconut oil, which is what MCT oil is derived from. I have tried using coconut oil in my coffee, but it has a distinct coco nutty flavor that I didn’t appreciate in coffee. It also gave me a bit on an upset stomach. MCT oil is colorless, odorless and flavorless and does not upset my stomach. Also, I typically use Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil to take advantage of just the most energy producing portion of the MCT oil, the C-8 (8 carbon chain length MCT).
C-8 is called caprlyic acid is a fat. It’s a medium chain tricglyceride.
C-8 is completely metabolized by the body into ketones and responsible for the state that’s all so popular right now known as ketosis. You can use caprylic acid to create ketones for your brain to run on, and you can also use caprylic acid to get and keep your body in a state of ketosis if you wish.
“You got your Ketostix dude? Yah Bro, peed a pink box this AM, I’m in the zone.” You know, you’ve all been a part of that conversation….. chirp chirp. It’s just me then? Really? Well Tim Ferriss is a pretty popular guy, listen to him and Digg founder Kevin Rose talk about it in this Episode of the Random Show.
Whatever ketones aren’t used for brain energy are not stored as fat. Let me repeat that. Ketones are NOT stored as fat. They are excreted from the body. source
MCT oil is more than just C-8 though. That’s why I use Brain Octane Oil. It’s just the C-8 fraction of MCT oil. It’s more expensive than MCT oil, but it gives me the ketones for my brain and nothing else.
Yes, you can buy cheaper MCT oil. It might be from GMO corn. It also certainly contains 4 types of MCTs. What scientists refer to as C-6, C-8, C-10 and C-12. Not all of those MCTs are converted into ketones and not all of them convert as quickly into ketones as the C-8.
I’ll use regular old MCT once in a while, but more often than not I use Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil. You can also try Bulletproof’s normal MCT, XCT Oil.
There are detractors of Bulletproof Coffee’s success. Articles talk about the downsides of consuming the 450 calories in the coffee as your morning meal. Other deride the high fat content. Yet others say it’s not nutritionally balanced and we need some protein in the morning.
I say to those people, try it yourself and then decide. If you don’t like it or do not want to try it, then that’s OK. I don’t like kale smoothies, but I’m not out there telling everyone to stop drinking them.
Some people want you to believe that 450 calories in the morning is going to wreck your day and make you fat and could just start a nuclear war. OMG are you really going to drink those 450 calories for breakfast? All from fat? You. Are. Nuts. And also probably about to get fat. HAHA.
Meanwhile, did anyone tell you that the “typical” American breakfast is somewhere between 380 – 600 calories? source
Hmm… so this Bulletproof coffee for breakfast thing is on par with the caloric load of a typical breakfast.
Oh, and wait, what about those Green Smoothies, surely those are low calorie and healthier!! Oops 300-500 calories per smoothie.
What about nutrient deficiency? Be smart about this people! If you have a BPC for breakfast, or if you decide to fast and eat nothing for breakfast, then please eat a proper lunch and dinner. I’m sure you can figure out how to load up on veggies, small amounts of fruit and healthy proteins for lunch and dinner and not compromise your nutrition. Do you really think drinking a BPC is worse than eating a doughnut or cream cheese bagel for breakfast? Healthy oils, a proper diet and intermittent fasting can help you. I’m not sure I could say that about a doughnut.
Do you need protein in the morning? This is a topic for a whole book. Some people, especially women, and especially women over 40 may appreciate some protein in the morning. You can add protein to your coffee (whey or collagen protein) or just have some eggs or whatever along with your coffee. Hard charging athletes or those who workout before breakfast may also benefit. Experiment and determine what fits you best. For most of us, skipping protein in the morning and continuing our fast may be very helpful.
Who Drinks this Stuff Anyway?
There’s a reason why Superman
Movie stars, executives, entrepreneurs and others looking for an edge are drinking it as well claiming it helps keep them focused and on task during busy mornings. Everyone from Andy Dick to Mandy Moore and Shailene Woodley are raving about it

How to Make it
True BPC is:
- High quality Bulletproof Beans brewed into coffee. Bulletproof beans are tested for 27 different toxins including Ochratoxin A and histamines, all of which can occur in coffee and all of which may have a negative effect on your cognitive and physical performance. Why isn’t your coffee tested and certified mold toxin free Bro? Think coffee is just coffee? See this post for why you really do want to try getting toxin free beans!
- A tablespoon of MCT oil, preferably just the C-8 fraction of MCT oil known as Caprylic Acid.
- A tablespoon of Butter from grassfed cows (or 2 tablespoons, or just a teaspoon – use as much or little as feels right to you).
- Optional and acceptable Add-Ins to stay in fasting mode – Cocoa Butter, Stevia, Xylitol, Erythritol.
- Optional add-ins if you are not going to fast – 1-3 raw eggs, collagen protein powder, cocoa. Whey protein powder can be added, but only after the coffee has cooled down a bit to prevent denaturing your cold processed, grass fed whey protein concentrate.
- Mix everything up in a high speed blender, like a Blendtec, Bullet, or Vitamix. In a pinch, a stick blender also works. If you are traveling – see this post for how to make your BPC on the road.

I have been drinking Bulletproof Coffee nearly every day for the last 4 years. I use just the MCT oil (Brain Octane Oil) and butter version with some added stevia. I do this 3 or 4 days a week and on the other mornings I add collagen protein powder or raw eggs to get in some protein before or after a workout.
It took me a few months to get used to drinking coffee everyday instead of eating breakfast. The science does indicate that fasting improves health and longevity and Bulletproof coffee makes it easier for me to fast.
I am able to postpone eating until about noon or 1pm with no problem, unless I had a really hard workout the day before and my body screams at me to eat.
I’m sticking with my Bulletproof Coffee and intermittent fasting.
Don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself.
