Can You Sleep Better Using PEMF? – Delta Sleeper
I LOVE SLEEP!
Remember when you were a kid and could fall asleep ANYWHERE, and then wake up sometimes just minutes later and be ready to play?
Sometimes I really miss those days.
I’m reminded of that fact every time I take the kids somewhere. Even if our destination is 10 minutes away, it never fails that before we’re even off our road, at least one of them is already asleep.
I wish it was still that easy to fall asleep or STAY asleep.
We all know the importance of getting enough QUALITY sleep.
But what exactly is QUALITY sleep?
Quality sleep is the right combination of all of the 5 stages of sleep which make up the sleep cycle and going through 5 of these cycles.
Here is a quick explanation of each of the 5 stages of sleep:
- Stage 1– This is when you are starting to fall asleep and it is very easy to wake up. This is the stage you enter during dull, boring meetings and then jerk awake, looking around to see if anyone noticed. You don’t do that? OH, me either..
- Stage 2– Your brain waves start to slow down during this stage and your eyes stop moving.
- Stage 3– During this stage your brain waves get even slower.
- Stage 4– Also known as the deep sleep stage, this is when your brain is producing the delta waves and you get many of the restorative benefits. As you get older you typically spend much less time in this stage.
- Stage 5– This is the Rapid Eye Movement or REM stage when you dream. This is also where your brain consolidates memories.
One complete cycle of sleep can last 80 to 120 minutes.
If you’ve ever done a search for sleep hacking, you know that there are TONS of supplements, gadgets and techniques out there that claim to give you better sleep. While I’m sure that there are many out there that really do deliver, its almost impossible to weed though them to figure out which ones really work and which ones don’t.
Throughout the past few years I’ve really concentrated on my sleep. I started with tracking my sleep to give me a baseline of how I was doing and to know how any supplement or “hack” would stack up against my “normal.”
After that I started experimenting with different techniques, supplements and gadgets to try to really get it dialed in. I thought I had my sleep about as good as I could get it. Then one of my friends introduced me to a guy that claimed to have a device that could make my sleep even better.
“Yeah right” I said. “I get great sleep already”
Reality check… It COULD get better.
If you’ve grown tired.. pun intended.. of trying to find a way to get better sleep, then maybe you should give a technology called PEMF or pulsed electromagnetic field a try.
This of course should only be used once you have made all of the other changes in your habits, sleep hygiene and nutrition that we discuss in our sleep series.
In use since the invention of electricity, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field or PEMF is a technology that has been used for many years for healing bone fractures but also in the treatment of depression, migraines and other conditions. It does this by emitting certain electromagnetic frequencies that the body responds to in certain ways.
Thaddeus is even experimenting with one right now to aid in healing his son’s broken arm.
When it comes to sleep, this PEMF device exposes your body to a specific frequency that simulates the frequency that your brain produces when it is sleeping.
More about this below..
DSleep – Delta Sleeper SR1 Sleep Device
This is the device that I’ve been trying out for the past month.
The Delta Sleeper is a PEMF device that stimulates the frequencies that your brain produces when you are in deep sleep. Specifically, these are delta wave patterns, hence the name. This frequency allows you to fall asleep faster and also helps you to go fully through your natural sleep cycles.
This little thing only weighs 1/2 of an oz and is so small that some mornings I forgot I was even wearing it. It attaches to your skin using a double sided adhesive.
The only issue I have with this is my chest hair. Sometimes it hurts a little to take it off. So, trying not to be a wimp I usually just rip it off and hope for the best.
Placement & Operation
It is recommended that you place this device underneath your collarbone near your brachial plexus. The network of nerves there act as a conduit to take the signal straight to your brain. Some people have also experimented with placing the device on your third eye to get the signals straight to your brain. That placement just isn’t as comfortable to me as a side sleeper.
Once you are ready to go to sleep, you press the small button on the device which turns it on for 22 minutes. Then if you do happen to wake up during the night you just press the button again to quickly fall back asleep.
As I said before, I thought my sleep was pretty dialed in.
I have spent countless nights trying out different techniques, supplements and anything else you can think of to optimize my sleep.
Many of these things had a positive impact on my sleep by none nearly as dramatic as the Delta Sleeper.
As you can see from the graph above, the Delta Sleeper increased my sleep quality a whopping 14% after a month of use. The closest thing to that is binaural beats which I have listed as Brain.fm which comes in at only 6%.
Another thing I noticed was an improvement to my morning HRV results, especially after days that I had a very hard workout. Before using the device, these workouts would cause my HRV to drop 5-10 points. This was basically telling me that my nervous system needed extra time to recover.
The morning after these same workouts I noticed that my HRV had only dropped 2 or 3 points. I am assuming that this improvement is due to the increased recovery I received from a deeper, more restorative sleep.
The biggest concern that I had about this device was the electro-magnetic frequencies. When it comes to health and sleep, EMF’s are very concerning. This is the reason why I shut off the WIFI in my house at night, switch all devices to airplane mode, and sleep on a grounding mat.
These concerns were greatly reduced when I learned that the frequency that the DSleep device emits is only .5 gauss. To put this in to perspective, the earth’s magnetic field is between .25 and .6 gauss. That means that this device stays within the natural frequency of the of earth so that it does not cause any health risks or concerns.
This device has undergone rigorous testing has has even been legally cleared and classified as low risk by the FDA.
I absolutely love this device. I plan on continuing to test it for the next month. I will even get a chance to see if it helps me to fall asleep on a plane as I fly to Austin next month. Thaddeus will be testing this out for a month or so and then we will publish another review with the added data that we have gathered.
I do feel that if you don’t have serious sleep issues then you probably shouldn’t use this every night. If you do have problems with getting quality sleep then this may be a much better alternative to pharmaceuticals which can actually cause much more harm than good.
There are no known side effects of using this device and many people have reported that it has allowed them to get a full 8 hours of sleep without the use of their normal medications.
It has also been reported to be quite effective against headaches and migraines.
How Much is This Thing Going to Cost Me?
Yes, that SEEMS like a lot of money, and at first, it intimidates some people.
Think about it this way. How much would you pay to get a really good nights sleep and to fall asleep quickly?
How much would you pay to know you could wake up in the middle of the night and just press a button and go right back to sleep?
Even if it’s only $5, think about all those $5 over the course of your life?
Is the price worth it?
Only if it works!
Chris has had great success so far, but needs another month to put it through the paces. Thaddeus will try it out next before we write our full review. We want you to know if it worked for us and if we recommend it.
Wait two more months to see how it performed, or go ahead and try it out yourself.
